Santa Monica College celebrated Black History Month during February 2019 with an enlightening and fun lineup of events that included multiple speakers, as well as music, dance, art, and food, with many events presented by the Black Collegians student club.

Occasional wet weather moved some events indoors during the month, but that didn’t dampen student, faculty, and staff enthusiasm to learn about, share, and celebrate Black History.  Scheduled BHM events highlighted a spectrum of Black culture, including those focused on African, Caribbean, and African-American aspects of Black experience.

Black Collegians President Emmanuel Smith had this to say about the celebrations: “People from all different cultures are getting involved; they love the food, they’re dancing in the middle of the floor – I really love how they appreciated our culture.” Added Ebonisha Fisher, Black Collegians’ Treasurer, “Today here at SMC, we gave a little knowledge about the different parts of the Caribbean.”

For those who missed the events on-campus, the Pirate invites readers to enjoy the short video [above] highlighting the month’s events, directed by SMC Mediamakers Club President Dominic Cokely.
